Nyisango is a Non-Governmental Organization that was established in 1998 as a welfare organization and registered in september 2002 under the NGO Coordination Act as a National NGO with the mandate to embrace the development of an all round human well being andsocial advancement of orphans, vulnerable childeren and women living with HIV/AIDS as far as reproductive health, socio-economic and property owenership are concerned.
It based in the city of Nairobi with 27 constituent Nyisango groups in different districts in Nyanza province. As much as each group is autonomous they are answerable to the main body in Nairobi. Within the districts the groups are composed of further 4-6 sub groups making Nyisango to have a direct linkage with 100 organized groups and an accumulated membership well above 3000 women and men. Nyisango is basically a ‘woman’s only’ organization having women of varied professional background committed to making a change in the life of the woman and the girl-child. Started and managed by women only at the inception, now a few groups have one or two male members, either as replacements for their dead wives or as patrons. The members of the small groups work together at different projects creating a network that has facilitated competitiveness, cohesion and accountability and resulting in a feeling of ownership. Once these women are empowered, they make great efforts to succeed and take pride in their achievements.
With varied activities ranging from human rights awareness, economic empowerment through IGAs and micro-credit schemes, issues relate to the vulnerable groups and especially the girl-child concerning her education and marriage to matters concerned with stopping stigma and discrimination for People living with AIDS (PLWAs). The organization has not only empowered widows and other caregivers, but has been in the fore front in fighting HIV/AIDS and its social, cultural and economic effects to the society. This is being achieved through Income Generating Activities (IGAs) involving weaving of kikoy clothes, basket making, pottery and training in appropriate technology to increase productivity of farm produce for income generation.
Nyisango also builds the capacity of the community through Health Education and advocate appropriate sexual behavior change to avoid HIV/AIDS and other sexual transmitted infections and provide counseling for voluntary HIV testing. For those who are infected with HIV, education on positive living for longer, ARV Therapy, Nutrition and Personal Hygiene has become part of our campaign agenda. Our task now is to advocate behavior change to avoid the spread of the disease and new infections. We educate the women who insist they must be inherited to use condoms and the gel and lives (People know the dangers of unprotected sex, but culture and tradition seems to override all factors of infection and re-infection). We at the same time visit schools in the same areas we have projects and talk to the students about the reality of being infected with the virus.
